Qik! Stream Video Live from Your Nokia Mobile Device Now!

by admin

First, a haiku:

Have you tried out Qik?
Easily stream videos
From your mobile phone.

Sorry, I couldn’t resist. With a name like that, it seemed to merit some quick verse, too.

But now let’s get down to business, shall we?

If you have yet to try Qik on your Nokia mobile device, stop what you’re doing – well, once you’re done reading this blog post! – and go get it in Ovi Store, gosh darn it.

This free mobile application from the eponymous California-based company, allows you to easily stream live video from your Nokia mobile device. You can make recordings that are posted to Qik.com available for all the world to see; and you can also share your videos with just about everyone using services like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.

The app is available in 19 different languages – in case you’re feeling adventurous – and as you make new videos, you can (if you so choose) broadcast your current location with remarkable accuracy.

For those of you that have a Nokia N97, Qik comes preinstalled on the device, and it looks like it is bundled with some nifty additional features, including on-screen chat with friends while you are streaming.

Here’s a demo video showing the app in action on the Nokia N97 (please ignore the way she says “Nokia” at the beginning – I’m sure she means well):

The application works on a huge variety of Nokia S60 3rd Edition and 5th Edition devices – 65 according to the Qik website. (And believe me, it really is 65 different Nokia devices – I counted! Yes, I admit it, I tend to obsess a little … but I do it all for you, dear reader.)

I downloaded it recently to my Nokia E75, and a teammate of mine now has it on his Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. We’ll plan to make some short videos soon, and post them online for sharing.

After downloading the app from Ovi Store, there is a very short registration process on the device to get started – it should take less than a minute to complete it.

From there, once you have the app running, you’re one click away from streaming live video from your mobile to the Web – all the videos that you make are saved to your user ID/page on the Qik website. It’s pretty cool to see your video online, happening in (near) real-time as the recording takes place on your handset. So you can use it for videos you want to record and broadcast, but you can just as easily use it as a streaming video tool, and share moments with family and friends when you can’t be together, or just as easily use it to share a presentation or meeting with people located in an office far, far away.

Give Qik a try – you’ll be making movies before you know it.
