If you can say it, Vlingo can help you do it faster
by JasonBlack
Looking to saving some time when using your Nokia S60 device? Install Vlingo and voilà, you have a solution! Now,
anyone that knows me well will know that I don’t throw the “s” word
(solution) around lightly. It’s one of those super-loaded,
techno-jargony words that everyone claims to have these days. So,
believe me when I say, Vlingo is the real deal. And while it feels a
little silly to gush about an app, I am really into Vlingo. I feel a
little bit like Stewie from “Family Guy” when he meets “Death” for the first time (I think) – it’s love at first sight. You know what I mean?
Vlingo,
from the Cambridge, Mass.-based company of the same name, is a
fantastic – can we say “vantastic”? – and free mobile app that enables you to
use your voice to control a wide variety of functions on your Nokia
device. This includes placing calls without multiple button presses;
searching the web; creating quick “notes to self” that you can save for
later; and opening/starting other third-party applications on your
device. Additionally, you can use Vlingo to compose and send e-mail or text
messages – all using voice control – no typing necessary.
But don’t take my word for it – check out this video showing Vlingo on a Nokia E71:
On touch-enabled Nokia devices, such as the Nokia N97, using Vlingo is
even easier. For starters, you can add a short-cut icon for the app to
your device’s homescreen, so the functionality is simply one-click
away; and then when you are using the app, you press and hold a
button on the screen to activate the voice-recognition software.
I have been testing Vlingo on both a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic device, and a Nokia N97, and it has been flawless the entire time. And, according to the Vlingo website, the app will come preinstalled on the new Nokia N97 mini and the Nokia E72, which is very cool indeed.
Now,
let’s be clear, the free version of Vlingo in Ovi Store does everything
described above, but you are limited to sending 5 text or e-mail messages. It’s enough to whet your whistle. And, my
hunch is, once you get a taste for this app and the convenience factor
it brings to your mobile device, you will burn through those 5 freebies in a
hurry. At that point, Vlingo is hoping you will consider an upgrade to
the Plus edition, which provides for unlimited text and e-mail via
voice along with all of the other functionality of the free version of the app. The Plus edition costs either $4.99/month, or a one-time fee of
$19.99. In my opinion, this would be money well spent.
The basic version of Vlingo is free in Ovi Store.
Now that you’re done reading about it, what are you waiting for? Go get it and see for yourself why Vlingo is all that and a side of fries.
