Now You Can Make Mobile Video Calls with fring
by JasonBlack
The social networking app called fring recently launched a new version of its mobile application for use on Nokia S60 devices. So what? Companies launch new versions of their products all the time, right? Well, in this case, the new version of fring does something truly awesome – and truly unique.
(I feel like there should be a drum roll here – this is a big deal, folks …)
Using the latest version of fring, you can now make mobile video calls to other people using fring – or with people using Skype – using the Wi-Fi of 3G internet connection on your mobile device.
And, to make it even easier to use, as fring notes in a recent press release about this update to their service, this new video calling feature “is embedded within the fring application that enables free voice calls to other fring users, Skype and GTalk buddies, as well as friends on regular phone lines via Skype-Out and hundreds of popular SIP services.”
This short YouTube demo provides a look at the new video calling feature in fring:
If you haven’t tried fring before on your Nokia device – now might be the time to sign up. (You can also learn more on the fring website.)
The app and the service are free – you would only need to be mindful of any data connection charges – and then, using fring you can participate in live chat, update profiles, share files and talk with friends from several instant messaging services (including: MSN, AIM, GoogleTalk and Skype). It can also be used with various online social networking services, including: Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm and more. And, the easy part is, all of this contact information shows up in a single, integrated fring contact list.
The new version of fring with support for mobile video calls is currently available as a free download in Ovi Store, and it can be used on the following Nokia devices: X6, N97 mini, N97, 5800 Xpress Music, as well as the Nokia N95 8G and N95 devices. It is expected that support for this new service on fring will be available for other Nokia devices soon – we’ll keep you posted.
