Have Yourself a Merry Finnish Christmas
by MartinMarshall
Editor’s Note: We learned earlier this month that Santa Claus in fact comes from Finnish Lapland, so it makes perfect sense that Ovi Store would offer its vision of a Finnish Christmas. Enjoy.
Adding a little fun for Christmas, there is the free Finnish Christmas application from Wunderman UK for use on Nokia Symbian devices (S60 5th Edition) in Ovi Store. The application has three different means of spreading holiday cheer, including virtual Mistletoe; a digital, animated Snowglobe; and customizable Christmas cards that you can send via e-mail.

The first is your own portable mistletoe, which jiggles as you hold it overhead in accordance with the accelerometer movement of the phone. At first I didn’t know that it jiggles in response to the accelerometers on my N97, but as I moved it about, I saw that the mistletoe always pointed towards the sky, even as I moved the phone in an arc. Moving or not, it adds a surprise element to a Christmas party, or just a private celebration for two …

The second is Snowglobe, which is a lovely pastoral Finnish scene that starts out clear but is then visited by a gentle snowfall. You know that it is a Finnish scene because there is a Finnish flag floating over the horizon. As I tilted the Nokia N97, I discovered that the snow falls according to true gravity. So, if I rotated the phone nearly 90 degrees I could make the snow fall sideways. As much as I tried to turn it into a blizzard by shaking the device, the snow still kept falling in a gentle fashion. The Snowglobe is a good application to share with young children curled around the fireplace.
The third and most elaborate part of the app was the custom Christmas card maker. It allows you to customise and send your own Christmas cards to friends. It starts with a default snowy landscape scene, so if you only want to add your text message to the card it is very quick. If you want to customise the landscape, you can add more houses, trees, gnomes, flying reindeer, snowmen, moons, clouds, or whatever else you like, it can be added just by dragging the icons from a column on the left. There is a limit to the card’s complexity, however, so after about five or six added images, you may have to subtract something. Then, a click of the envelope icon, and you can send the customised Christmas card to the person of your choice.

The Finnish Christmas application can be downloaded for free from Ovi Store.
