Learn How to Solve a Rubik’s Cube on Your Mobile!

by BillVolpe

Cube Touch from Offscreen is essentially your virtual Rubik’s Cube. For those of you not familiar with this puzzle cube, here is your quick history lesson:

-Invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture, Erno Rubik
-The original cube consists of 6 faces covered by 9 stickers
-Current world record for solving the Rubik’s Cube is 7.08 seconds by Erik Akkersdijk

Ok enough history, let’s get into this app.

Here’s the nitty gritty:

Graphics
It is a 3D cube. Enough said. No animations, just plain and simple three-dimensional cube that can be moved in any direction.

Game play
For a virtual Rubik’s Cube, you’re expectations should be set on simple. That’s exactly what Offscreen has done here. When you load up the application you  have three tiny buttons on the top of the screen (Info, New game, and Exit). A big cube below those buttons, and that’s all. What else do you need?

Music/Sound FX
None. I mean really though, would you want a looping music track playing while you are trying diligently to solve the cube!

Controls
I have been trying to solve this cube on the Nokia N97, obviously with 0% success. I am very impressed by the controls. The tactile feedback is excellent. You can turn any row of the cube with ease. And you can rotate the entire cube simply by touching the gray background in the direction you wish to rotate. Very simple, and easy to use. However, very difficult and close to impossible to beat!

Or is it. . .

OK, I admit it. I can’t beat this thing. I have no idea how to solve it, and maybe I just don’t have the patience. The only downside I see to this game for me is simply. If I have an actual Rubik’s Cube in my hand and I get frustrated with it, I am tossing it down a flight of stairs or against a nearby wall. I DO NOT, repeat DO NOT recommend you do the same with your innocent touch screen device!

Don’t worry though; if you are dedicated there are ways to solve this! It’s all about the algorithms:

Good luck and happy cubing!

This game is available for S60 5th Edition devices. It is FREE in Ovi Store and it can be purchased here.
