Bounce Evolution Sets the Bar High for Nokia N900 Games

by BillVolpe

Bounce Evolution from Finland’s own Rovio is a truly breathtaking game, demonstrating the impressive graphics capabilities of the Nokia N900. It uses intuitive motion control to guide your character Bounce through either beautiful scenery or timed races on a high-tech rollercoaster-like track.

Here’s the nitty gritty:

Graphics
If Bounce is setting the benchmark for graphics and 3D acceleration on the Maemo platform, then there are going to be some really great games out there for this platform. The graphics and 3D acceleration is truly unreal. Graphics like this have never been done before on any mobile device, hands down.

Game play
Wow. Not only are the graphics outstanding, but the game play does not disappoint, either. There are two different game modes: Time Mode (where you race against the clock to finish a track in your fastest time) and Interactive Mode (where you travel around the stunning landscapes interacting with other characters). Both modes are a blast, and are sure to kill some time no matter where you are.

Music/Sound FX
Beautiful, crisp, surround sound quality sound effects and music. So realistic, the beginning loading screen sounded like I was sitting on a beach in the Caribbean.

Controls
The controls truly make this game as fun and as unique as it is. It is amazing to see the gaming potential of OpenGL ES 2 coupled with the accelerometer.

OK. Plain and simple, this game is rendered using OpenGL ES 2.0 hardware acceleration, allowing the game’s next-generation graphics to run smoothly on the ever so sharp 800 x 480 display. If you are fortunate enough to get your hands on a Nokia N900, then Bounce Evolution is truly a ‘must-have’ game.

Game on.

This game is available for free in the Ovi Store Beta release for the Nokia N900 and it can be downloaded here.

The N900 needs more content like this like the excellent “Angry Birds” also from Rovio which is available via the Ovi Store Beta available for the N900

I like both Bounce and Angry Birds! Great work by Rovio! :)

  • Which Is it?

It does not look very smooth, graphics stutter quite a lot. It is nowhere near as smooth as the YouTube video. If it played as badly as the demo video, I certainly would not buy it.

Hi I’m keen to see the rest of the game (since this only has 2 levels)!

  • Keith

I’m keen to see the rest of the game, since this seems more like a tech demo than full fledged game!

  • Martin

@Keith: It’s just a playable tech demo. Presumably the same company will release other games based on the same engine.

@Which Is It?: I noticed the same, this YouTube video showed a lot of stuttering and freezing but she managed to cover it up. I suspect the N900 had other apps running in the background, because the game is quite smooth on my N900.

A properly flashed N900 should run the Bounce game at around 25fps in the nature level and 35fps in the race level. There may be something wrong with your N900 if the Bounce graphics stutter a lot, or you may have too many applications running in the background. The game was originally made to be an early showcase for the N900, partly produced to verify the capability of this new platform. No additional levels have been made… yet ;)

Angry Birds on the other hand is a full game ported from the iGadgets. A generous 21 levels are included in the free version, and there is a level pack with 42 additional levels (as soon as the Ovi Store guys manage to enable application sales for N900). This one is my favourite too :)

Kids fight over my N900 when I get home in the evening so that they can play bounce. That’s the type of consumer experience that leads people to be passionate about their device. Great job.

    Loved it. :)

So much potential. Nokia should definitely get in contact with such serious [games and applications] developers.

It’s been a while since Bounce came out on N900 running Maemo.
Yet… since then, no improvement… no more such games… I guess Rovio see the lights at the end of tunnel for iOS rather than on Maemo. While updates for Angry birds on apple apps have gone through several rounds, the update Angry Birds on Maemo hardly progressed much. I’m not sure why Nokia bloggers here gave me the impression that Bounce and Angry Birds are exclusively created for Maemo… or the bloggers here just never look at Apple apps… Is it a matter of ignorance or denial?

@Luke – thank you for writing to us. On a personal note, we understand fully your point of view. We are well aware of what is happening on other devices/platforms, but our role with the Daily App blog is to help share the best apps available for Nokia devices.

As it happens, we have been told about new games – and other apps – that are in the works right now for Nokia devices, built using the technology called Qt (some for Symbian devices, some for Maemo, etc.) and we will be featuring those apps in the blog as soon as we can.

Feel free to stay in touch. And let us know if there are there any specific apps that you’ve been interested in learning more about – anything you would like to see us test/review in the blog?

    Thanks – jason
