ForecaWeather Makes Even a Gloomy Forecast Look Beautiful
by JasonBlack
If you’re a weather fan – and I know there are many of you out there – you will likely be ready to start drooling (just a little) when you see the ForecaWeather Widget on the Nokia N900. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen weather look this good – or interesting – before. And, as we enter the depths of winter here in the northeast United States, having access to accurate – and easy-to-read – weather reports is really important.
ForecaWeather, from the Helsinki-based Foreca, displays current conditions for up to four different cities at a time, and you can easily change the cities that are displayed with a quick keyword search by city name. The weather is shown in landscape mode on the device – and all of the details are portrayed in ways that make the information clear and unmistakable.
The top portion of the screen shows current conditions in the selected city, including temperatures, humidity, visibility, wind speed, and even details for sunrise and sunset. It also tells you how recently those conditions were last observed, and where the information was recorded from – you know you’re getting truly localized content here.

As you smoothly scroll down the screen, you then see a nine-day forecast for the selected city – the first showing big, self-explanatory icons for the predicted weather conditions, and the last four days of the nine shown on a second row in slightly smaller (but no less easy to understand) graphics.
If you need more information (And if you do, admit it: You’re a weather junkie!), there are plenty of links from the app out to the Foreca.com website to get additional information, such as hourly forecasts or animated maps showing temperatures and rainfall.
Within the app settings you can adjust things like the Units displayed (F vs. C), and how often you want the app to retrieve new weather updates – I have the app set to hourly (the minimum increment), which is probably often enough.
Additionally, ForecaWeather includes a miniview that can be seen on the homescreen of your Nokia N900, showing the present temperature in your selected location, as well as the forecast for the next four days. This at-a-glance view is a nice option if you don’t need to be immersed in the details. Click on that miniview, and you call up the full version of the app on the device. The choice is yours.
The ForecaWeather Widget is available now, and can be downloaded for free from the Ovi Store Beta release for the Nokia N900.
Additionally, a version of ForecaWeather is available for Nokia Symbian devices, including S60 3rd Edition and S60 5th Edition. A one-year license costs $4.99 (USD).
So, how you tried ForecaWeather yet on the Nokia N900? What do you think? And, what other apps in the Ovi Store Beta release for the Nokia N900 have you downloaded already? Let us know what you think in the Comments section below.
