Fight Old-School Style in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Shredder Reborn!
by BillVolpe
They’re back … Welcome back to the world of the best known ninja heroes – Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo! In spite of the great effort of the four ninja turtles, the Shredder has been reborn. Now the fight continues in the streets of New York, changed into a hellish place full of demons and undead. There is still hope that the Shredder may be defeated. These are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Here’s the nitty gritty:
Graphics
The graphics are pretty good. Nothing to flashy, but simple, colorful graphics to say the least. My only complaint here is that everything seems a little bit too small on the screen. For our farsighted readers out there, you may find yourself reaching for your glasses for this one. Not to worry though. The game is well worth using your glasses for. You’ll be hooked, trust me.
Game play
Here’s the deal. Not until I started to try out this game did I realize that it was a RPG (Role Playing Game)! That’s right a TMNT RPG! Surprised and shocked, my excitement level immediately elevated. So the object here is to of course find Shredder and defeat him once again. You travel around the mean streets of New York, running into many enemies along the way. Like a typical RPG when you engage into a battle, it is a turn based system of attacking. You chose from the options of Attack, Defend, Wait, Flee, Concentrate, or Technique. As the game progress you can obtain new techniques and skills as you gain valuable experience points. All in all, there are 20 different techniques and 7 different battle environments to explore. The game is fast-based, so buckle up working you way up to defeating the all powerful Shredder was never an easy task.
Music/Sound FX
Good music track. Simple MIDI files, but it does the job. Sound effects are basic here too. Nothing to write home about.
Controls
For touch enabled devices, the on screen controls work rather nicely. However, I think this game could have been 10x better if it supported landscape mode! Nonetheless, controls are as follows:
- Virtual Directional pad to move up, down, left, right
- Left soft key to confirm
- Right soft key to go back or skip
As I mentioned above, TMNT + RPG = great success. Maybe I am biased here because when I was child I used to watch the TMNT and play with their action figures… maybe I am biased because I love RPGs. Regardless, if you enjoy TMNT or RPG games then TMNT: The Shredder Reborn is for you. So what are you waiting for? Take out that sword for +300 HP damage, and don’t forget to heal yourself with a potion to refill your HP and MP!
Game on.
This game is available for both Nokia S60 3rd Edition as well as S60 5th Edition devices, and it is available for $2.99 (USD) in Ovi Store.
