Trimble Outdoors SE is a GPS waypoint navigation app, which is a fancy way of saying that it allows you to record, share, and navigate to electronic breadcrumbs. The advantage of electronic breadcrumbs is that they are not susceptible to hungry wolves. The advantage of this app is that it helps you manage your breadcrumbs, and it automatically generates graphic evidence of your exploits.

Before you go

Before you even download the app, I suggest you check out the Trimble web site to see how they record and display trips.  I searched for the term “Arizona” and found 50 trips shared by other Trimble users. Trips included hikes, runs, and bike rides both on and off road.

If you find a trip you want to take, you can copy the trip to your web account then send the trip to your Nokia. Each waypoint (breadcrumb) in the trip becomes a point to which the app can help you navigate. You can also modify the trip before you download it, or even create a trip from scratch.

Trimble Outdoors SE helps you navigate during your trip, including showing your current position on a map background. This display mode of course requires a map image of your current location — not a problem if you have an active mobile data or WiFi connection. Big problem if you’re in the backcountry and didn’t plan ahead. Before you go, use the free Adventure Planner software to download the necessary maps.
