Control Precisely Who Calls Your Nokia with Best Blacklist

by KevinSharp

You may not be able to control who calls your Nokia, but with Best Blacklist from Smartphoneware you can control who interrupts you. The app is like a personal “Do Not Call” list, except you can set up many different lists and change them during the day. Send the kid’s call to voice mail when you are in that big meeting. Automaticallly send a text message if a work colleague calls when you sit down to a family dinner. And of course reject spammers, even ones who ignore official regulations covering unsolicited phone calls and text messages.

Best Blacklist Lite is available free in Ovi Store, and is compatible with a wide variety of Nokia Symbian devices. See the compatibility section below for a full list of devices, including both keyed and touch versions. The only restriction on the free version is there is a limit of five to the number of callers you can include in any one list; if you need more that that, a paid version ($9.95) of the app is available from Smartphoneware. Read on for an explanation of why a limit of five list entries is not as strict a limit as you might think.

I tested the app on my Nokia N97.

Create and edit lists easily.

The core concept behind Best Blacklist is lists — just about as many lists as you might want. You can edit the ones that come pre-loaded with the app, or more likely you will want to create your owns.

  • Give each list a name: Family, Business, Spamming slime, and so on. Something descriptive so you recognize it later.
  • Configure each as a Black list (Block calls from numbers on the list and accept all others) or a White list (Accept calls from numbers on the list and block all others.)
  • Decide how to treat the callers you block. At your choice they will hear a busy signal or you can automatically send them a text message. You can even write the text message you want to send them.

Custom-cofigure your own Black lists (of callers to reject) and White lists (of callers to accept).

Then add correspondents to the list you want to block or accept. Here’s where the five-member restriction starts to look less restrictive. You can have only five entries for each list in the free version, but each entry can represent more than one phone number.

Notice that my Business white list shows only 2 Correspondents, though the configuration will accept calls from far more than two numbers. One entry is for Jason Black from my N97′s contact list. That single entry will accept a call or text from any of Jason’s numbers — his mobile, his home number, and his office number. The other entry is a number template that will accept any calls beginning with the Finnish country code.  Other multi-number entries include “All from Contacts” and “All Not in Contacts”

List entries can include more than one phone number.

Once you set up your lists, it’s easy to switch among them. Each time you open the app, you see your list of lists. Select then one you want to enforce now.

Easily switch among your lists.

Or use the scheduling feature to automatically switch among lists for you.

Automatically schedule which list is enforced when.

You may not be able to control who calls you, but with Best Blacklist on your Nokia mobile device, you can control who interrupts you (or not).

It’s not just that this ‘lite’ version accepts the tips you described to add over 5 numbers to a list, with my nokia 5800 it also accepts groups. You can add any contact to a group and then add the group to a list. The restriction fails to be nothing else than a very, very small nuisance when using groups.

Thanks for your post. I already love this program.
