Goojet Just Might Have a Secret Sauce for Web-based Stickiness
by JasonBlack
Once upon a time, there was a desire to create “stickiness” on the web – and it was an elusive goal for many. You know, what can you do to keep people engaged with your website or content, and keep them coming back for more? While I don’t know if anyone has found the magic formula for stickiness, there are certainly some notable attempts out there. And among those sites and services that have what it takes to be sticky, I would submit that Goojet should be added to the list.
First and foremost, its name alone has a quality that almost implies something you’re bound to get stuck in. But in this case, Goojet has a glue – or maybe it’s a secret sauce? – that feels right.
To make the most of Goojet, you need to be willing to do a little set-up work of your own, but I assure you it will all be worth it. You see, Goojet has both a desktop, web-based site, and a free mobile client that is available for use on Nokia Symbian devices (S60 3rd Edition and S60 5th Edition). You can use Goojet exclusively from the mobile app (and I’ve been finding that it works great on the Nokia E72), but you’ll be missing out on stuff if you do – I’ll explain shortly.
Once you register to use the service, you will be able to select a wide range of pre-selected content choices that are neatly packaged in a section for “Favorites.” This will links to services like Facebook, Weather, news sources, and much more.
You also have a tab for “News” which presents RSS feeds from major publications and websites (including The New York Times, BBC, USA Today, Techcrunch, Boing Boing, etc.). Within the News tab, you see most recent headlines from each feed first – one click to see the full story, and a link to the right of each headline leads to more headlines within that specific feed. Within both the News and Favorites sections you can easily add more content based on different categories.
Goojet also includes mobile messaging (via SMS) to other members of the service or to your own contacts (based on e-mail addresses or mobile phone numbers).
Now, if you don’t have enough content choices based on what you find within the mobile app, you can visit the desktop companion to Goojet to find a whole lot more. Log-in to the website – same credentials that you used on your Nokia mobile device – and you can quickly drag and drop new bits of content into your account so that the next time you fire up Goojet on your mobile, all of your new selections are synced and ready to go.
New things that you can add to your mobile collection of Goojets include interactive tools like folders, to-do lists and sticky notes. You can create your own online polls that can be shared with others using the Goojet service, and find content that other members think is worthwhile. Below is a poll that I created to see how it would look on the device – creating the poll was all done via the Goojet website.
Better still, you can add your own content that can then be shared with the rest of the Goojet community. To do this, you simply use the RSS feed option within the “Advanced” features to create content based on any website that your want – you can even customize the image that will appear with that content feed, and as long as you mark the visibility of your new feed as “public” it can then be discovered and added by anyone else using Goojet. Naturally, I created a Goojet feed for the Ovi Daily App blog – it took less than a minute to set it up, and it started working instantly (the beauty of an RSS feed).
And – dare I say it – I think it looks pretty darn cool. Above is the icon for the feed within my Favorites on the mobile client, and one click later, I can view the latest headlines associated with that feed, like below:
The options for the ways you use Goojet are entirely up to you, of course, which is one of the reasons that I think this app is so darn useful. It offer genuine customization along with interesting user-generated content. And both of those things will keep me coming back for more.
The Goojet mobile app is free to download in Ovi Store, and should be compatible with a broad range of Nokia Symbian devices.
