Do you know about biorhythms? The theory is that our lives are controlled by biological cycles that ebb and flow like the ocean tides. The mystical belief, beyond the realm of scientific proof or disproof, is that these cycles operate in four main areas — physical, emotional, intuitive, and intellectual — as well as a number of secondary areas.

Biorhythm adherents also believe these cycles can be charted for each person by the month and day, much like an astrological chart. On these charts, biorhythm cycles are shown as waveforms. When a wave rises, the theory goes, that cyclical area dominates our day. For example, if your biorhythm for intellect is particularly high today, then you will master the day using your intellectual powers. You will also be especially sensitive to the intellectual powers of others.

So much for the theory. Biorhythm Professional by Web ITem, Ltd., is an app for Nokia mobile devices that calculates your biorhythms and displays waveform charts you can use to plan your day. The only information you supply is a nickname and your birth date. So far, so good. Next, you simply select Show Rhythms from the main menu to see something like this:

You can move to different dates, too. On a touch screen device, such as the Nokia N97 I used for my test, you move around by tapping different parts of the screen. The app offers a kind of grid you make visible by tapping the Touch command in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. This grid shows you how to move forward to the next day, or back to the previous day, by tapping the area marked ‘Day’. It also shows you how select various waves by tapping in the areas marked ‘Curve’.

On Nokia devices without touch screens, you make these moves by pressing keys on the device keypad. For example, pressing the 4 key takes the chart back one day, while pressing the 6 key advances the chart to the next day.

By tapping the ‘Curve’ zone, you can also select just a single wave (intellect or physical, for example). This lets you get a good, clear view of your biorhythm in one area. Keep tapping, and Biorhythm Professional also gives you three other views: Secondary rhythms, which are wisdom, mastery, and passion; Extra rhythms, which are perception, psychic, and success; and I-Ching rhythms, which are aesthetic, awareness, and spiritual.

Like astrology fans, biorhythm proponents believe their theory can be used to enhance personal relationships, including our love lives. If two people’s biorhythms are in sync on a given day, all is well. If not, well, let the sparks fly where they may.

Indeed, Biorhythm Professional offers a ‘compatibility view’ that lets you enter a second person’s nickname and birth date, then compare their biorhythms for a specific day with yours. Using the app’s nomenclature, one of you is assigned to ‘Name 1’, while the other, to ‘Name 2’. By tapping in the upper right- or left-hand corner, you can toggle between your chart and theirs. As shown here, I’m comparing my chart for April 16 (labelled ‘PK’ as Name 1) with that of my wife (‘SK’ as Name 2) for the same day:

Alternatively, by giving the top of the screen a ‘long tap’ (more than 1 second), you can select a view that shows both your biorhythm waves at once. More usefully, you can select this plus a particular wave for a much clearer view. For example, the screenshot below shows that on one particular day, my wife and I are out-of-sync on aesthetics. My aesthetics wave is at only 29 per cent, while hers is at 54 per cent. We might want to postpone that visit to the art museum!
