Wouldn’t it be nice if your mobile mapping app was more like you? We’ve had a chance to play with an exclusive, new add-on technology for Ovi Maps called “Ovi Mapatars” that promises to make your driving experience a lot more personal.

The Mapatars look like little avatars that are layered into your Ovi Maps technology, and you can take them along for a ride. The cool thing is, these Mapatars can be made to look like anyone you want – a friend or spouse, a hot celebrity that you’ve always had a crush on – you get the idea.

For men, the default configuration for the Mapatar is one that looks a whole lot like you, so you never have to stop and ask for directions!

More than just a “mini me” the Ovi Mapatars also offer a wide range of conversation starters to help make your trip more interesting, including phrases like:

• “How ’bout them [fill in name of local sports team here]?”
• “Is it just me, or do you think we’re in for some rain today?”
• “Can you believe what [fill in local political leader's name/nickname] did this time?”

Your Mapatar is also your biggest personal fan, and will offer assorted platitudes aimed at making you feel good. Typical phrases include:

• “You look fantastic today. Have you lost weight?”
• “Gee that suit makes you look 10 years younger.”

Even better – for those of us who lack confidence on the road, your Mapatar will will periodically spout out words of praise and encouragement while you drive, to help keep you motivated until you reach your destination. Mine recently told me: “Good job – that turn was executed with precision!” Which was quickly followed by: “Wow, I never would have thought of making a U-turn there, but you did it! Well done, sir.”
