‘Doodle Jump is Freaking Awesome – Can I Play Again?’
by JasonBlack
So as I wake up the morning, the first thing my 10-year old daughter says to me – and I swear I’m not making this up – is: “Dad, can I play Doodle Jump?” Not, “good morning”, or “what’s for breakfast?” but, basically, “hand me your phone so I can play that game again!”
Yes, Doodle Jump - a massive hit on that other mobile platform – is now available for play on Nokia’s touch-enabled devices, and like so many have discovered for themselves, this game is a keeper. We’re completely hooked, and it didn’t take long for that to happen.
The premise is quite simple – perhaps that is part of its charm? – you need to help the Doodler make his way up from platform to platform, jumping back and forth to make your way higher and higher into the great beyond. The higher you go, the more points you get. But if you miss a platform, you fall – drop! – down to the bottom of the screen again, and it’s game over.
Easy right? Well, yes and no. The game plays beautifully on Nokia’s S60 5th Edition devices – we’ve been enjoying it on the Nokia N97 mini – where you can use the built-in accelerometer to gently tilt your device back and forth to make the Doodler move to the left and right. You can also control his movement by tapping on screen, but rocking the device seems easier.
So what’s the catch? Not all platforms that you jump on are safe. Green ones are safe. The ones that look like wood, are going to break in half, and you will crash through them everytime. And, as you get higher and higher in the game, some of the platforms will move (blue) or change colors and disappear beneath you.
Additionally, there are occasionally objects sitting on different platforms that you can use to help you move higher, faster. There are springs, and propeller-style beenies, and the extra-powerful jet pack for a serious boost. The tricky part is that you never know when and where these objects will be – each time you play the game, the layout changes, so you can’t just master the order of jumps and expect to do well. This is one of my favorite aspects of this game – the fact that it really does change each and every time you play it.
Of course, there are also obstacles to the Doodler’s progress, including these little baddies that equal instant death for your little dude if you run in to them by mistake. The Doodler is not without his defenses, however. Occasionally, like the various lift boosters you encounter, you’ll also find a protective bubble or force field that will protect your Doodler from harm; and if you tap on screen above the Doodler’s head, he will shoot little round balls right out of his nose. Adorable, and convenient.
You can play in single-player or two-player mode; and as you can see, Doodle Jump is visually great. The little characters have this wonderful hand-drawn look sitting on top of graph-style paper. And the animation within the game is smooth and responsive.
Each game is fast, and requires some serious concentration. You should see my daughter’s face when she’s playing – the look of determination is fierce. For now, she’s off somewhere trying to beat my high score.
Doodle Jump, from Mr. Goodliving, is available for $2.99 (USD) in Ovi Store.
