A Podcasting App for Nokia Devices? Yes, it’s Yasssu
by JasonBlack
Podcasts are one of those forms of media that just seem to fit with mobile devices. You have audio (or sometimes video) content from various media providers – and there is certainly a lot of it out there these days – and you can’t possibly listen to it all at once. But, you can take it with you, and play it back at a time when it more convenient for you, like during your commute, or while mowing the lawn. But on Nokia devices, finding good podcasts isn’t always easy … until now.
Now, you can use Yasssu, and find podcasts from a huge range of sources that can be organized, and played back when you want them. The app itself is primarily a gateway to the yasssu.com website, but the app is handy because it can store your personal log-in credentials (registration with the service is quick, and only needs to be done once).
Once you log-in to Yasssu, you can explore and find podcast content that is organized across multiple reference points, including: Topics (such as News, Business, Entertainment, Sports, etc.); Channels (which identifies podcasts from specific content providers like the BBC, Discovery Channel, The Economist – and many more); as well as by Industries (so you can search for content based on professions or skill sets).
If those options aren’t enough, you can always Search for new podcasts, too. A quick search for ‘NPR’ found a podcast for “All Songs Considered” which is a show I happen to like. When you find the one you want – or find a new one to try – just click the “Subscribe” button to have that podcast added to your personal collection of podcast feeds within the “My Yasssu” section of the service. Your subscriptions will be displayed in alphabetical order for your review and playback.
Most of the podcasts are available in either English or German (the company behind Yasssu is based in Vienna, Austria), but you can also search for podcasts in French, Italian and Spanish. You can also search for content based on user ratings (they use a 5 point system).
This short video explains the concept behind Yasssu:
Yasssu requires an active Internet connection to find and retrieve content, but the app itself is free to download from Ovi Store, and it is free to use.
