Voice Jockey Adds Interactive Fun to Your Nokia’s Call-Handling Routines
by MartinMarshall
Voice Jockey is an application that adds entertainment and a new level of functionality to handling calls on S60 5th Edition and S60 3rd Edition devices. It has intelligent call screening features as well as the ability to insert sound effects and other audio files as background mood music during a conversation. If you want someone to think that you are calling from a traffic jam or train station, you can add those sounds to the call. Additionally, it allows you to set specific ringback tones and ringtones for different callers.
I tried it out on my Nokia N97, and I’ll go straight to the most interesting part. For me, that was the interactive call response feature.
You get to the screen below by tabbing rightward from the Main tab using the right hand side of the rocker switch on the N97. This is the Interactive tab. Beijing-based Mobisophy, the developers of the app, have a few typos to clean up in the English version, but those do not affect the functioning of the product.
Initially, I chose Horoscopes as the interactive voice response selection. When I then called the N97 number from a different phone, the audio answer asked me to specify a birth month and day numerically. It then responded with a daily horoscope for that particular astrological sign.
Next, I set it to Password guard. The default password is 0000#, but I set mine to a different number. At that point, only those who knew my password number would actually be passed through to me on that device. All others would be blocked. I tested it out by calling my N97 and giving first the correct password, which it allowed through, and a second time using an incorrect password, which it rejected.
The other interactive options are more game-like, and include a Finger guessing game, and a Joke response. I should note that on Leave a message, you can insert your own voice in place of the default message, and make it as funny or straight as you like, and as long as you like.
When you select an option such as Horoscopes or Password guard, a green checkmark appears next to that selection. When you make another selection, such as a choice of music, your previous selection is automatically de-selected. There is an additional control by going back to the Main tab and selecting Options/Settings. One can, for example, choose manual response over auto response.
You can also switch between the reaction scenarios of background music, smart response, or interactive responses.
Tabbing leftward using the rocker switch, I came to the Music tab, which shows the available ringtones and ringback tones.
The default tones are fine if you like Christmas all year round, but my taste is a little different than that. So, I set about changing some of them by selecting the entry, clicking on Options, and re-recording the voice clips. I replaced Red-nosed reindeer with the original Troggs recording of “Wild Thing”, and “I Saw Three Ships” with Billy Joel’s “Still Rock and Roll To Me” because, well, that’s what kind of mood I was in.
You can add new clips, rename clips, and download additional clips from Mobisophy’s site to tailor the sounds to your preference.
Music aside, the app also turns your S60 device into an answering machine. Under Options/Message Box, I saw and heard the app’s recordings of my previous messages.
As you can see from the screenshot, Voice Jockey not only listed my messages for playback, but also told me what mode the app was in when the message was recorded, which is handy.
Voice Jockey can be downloaded from Ovi Store for $1.99 (USD). It is available in English, traditional Chinese, and simplified Chinese.
