Pound Your Chest and Roar! It’s a Gorilla Rampage on Your Nokia
by JasonBlack
Get ready for some chest-pounding fun with Gorilla Rampage from Digital Chocolate on your Nokia device. Once again, we find ourselves immersed in a game that asks for a little bit of role reversal. Last week, we got to play the part of the bad guy in Guns’n'Glory. Today, it’s time to put on a big monkey suit, and assume the title of King Gorilla, as he climbs to the top of one skyscraper after another in an effort to rescue the young lady in distress.
Like many of the games from Digital Chocolate, Gorilla Rampage has a great sense of humor about it. Additionally, like other games from this publisher, it is easy to get started, and then get hooked on the game.
The premise here is simple enough. As noted, you are the gorilla in this game, and it is your job to protect the lady, and steal her away to safety. (Well, we assume she wants to be protected … she isn’t given a whole lot of choice in this matter.) This video demo shows some quick action from the game so you can see what to expect:
As you will note, protecting the lady is not quite as simple as it looks. There are a wide variety of attackers who are trying to capture the gorilla-like you, but you are conveniently armed with an unlimited supply of large rocks that you can hurl down at your opponents to make them fall off the side of the building (happily, we do not see them splat below).
This game works really nicely on Nokia Symbian OS, S60 5.0 (touch-enabled) devices like the Nokia N97 mini, where you play in portrait mode. You just tap the screen to drop a rock from the gorilla’s hands. The one thing to note here is that every time you throw a rock, the gorilla changes direction and moves the other way on the platform where he is perched. (The game alsoruns on other Nokia devices, like the Nokia E72, but the gameplay isn’t as easy as the touch devices.)
In the early stages, each skyscraper to climb has two levels – later on the buildings get taller, adding to the challenge. The game breaks the levels out in various cities around the world, and there are six levels per city to conquer, so 36 challenging levels in all. At the end of each level, you make your get away in a blimp, and then start right up on the next level.
If your gorilla hits three opponents in a row with the same rock, you get the chance to catch a power-up that floats up to you, including things like bigger rocks, auto-spitting coconuts (really useful), and a mighty roar that seems to stun your opponents.
At the same time, the enemies get more difficult as you move to higher levels – this seems only fair, right? There is a really good help section built in to the game that explains fully all of the options available to you.
As you can expect, the animation in the game is really fun to watch, and there is a basic sound track that keeps the frenetic pace of the game going (you can turn it off, if you find it bothersome). There are also multiple language options in the game (see details below).
Find your inner-animal, and go on a Gorilla Rampage of your own!
Gorilla Rampage is available for $4.99 (USD) in Ovi Store.
