Do Mini-Yoga During the Work Day with Yoglet 1 on Your Nokia

by MartinMarshall

From carpal-tunnel syndrome to a kinked neck to constant eyestrain, the repetitive tasks of a daily work routine can put the harmony of your body out of kilter. It doesn’t even have to be the tasks that you do at a desk. It can be any all-work-and-no play scenario.

The solution: a little bit of yoga slipped into the daily routine to relieve the stress. It doesn’t have to mean changing clothes, going down to the gym and setting aside a big block of time for it. You can actually do it for a few seconds at your desk, or out in the world without people thinking that you are a bit off. The relief of the stress can even help you to work longer and more productively.

All that being said, Yoglet 1 from M Systems is a simple app running on an Symbian OS, S60 5.0 devices that helps you to focus your attention on brief, helpful yoga exercises. Yoglet 1 addresses the four most common work-related tension points, including exercises for the forearms, eyes, wrists/fingers, and neck. It couldn’t be simpler, with each exercise depicted as a few frames in a comic-book like presentation on your screen.

I tried it out on my Nokia N97, and immediately brought up the home screen, shown below, which gives you the choice of four types of exercises.

I started with the forearm stretches. There were ten frames that stepped through the simple exercises, including locking fingers in a pose and bringing them down to my chest while the fingers were still locked, as shown below.

Next were the exercises to reduce eyestrain. I’m not going to reveal all of the content of the eyestrain exercises, but they did involve fixing one’s eyes on distant objects, and also, as shown below, resting them.

The third section is aimed at relaxing the wrists and fingers. This is especially important for those who might be susceptible to carpal-tunnel syndrome. This exercise involves moving back from the desk and using the edge of the desk or table to move your fingers backward.

Finally, there are the neck exercises. They took me way back to a martial arts class that I had taken in college. They are as simple as can be, straight up and straight down, as shown below.

These are not earth-shaking revelations, and we have all done them at one time or another in an exercise class. However, having it right in front of me, spelled out in the text and shown in the cartoon panels, makes it so easy to do that I actually do it.

I found that I could do each set of exercises in ten to fifteen seconds, so the interruption in my workday was for all practical purposes invisible. Not that it needed to be invisible, because bosses know that a less stressed worker is a more productive worker. Is that worth a buck? In my case, definitely!

Yoglet 1 is available on Ovi Store for $0.99 (USD).
