Tune in to Nokia Internet Radio – Your one stop source of radio content!

by mhashmee

Here’s presenting a nifty piece of technology from the guys here at Nokia – Nokia Internet Radio. Sift through a vast depository of radio stations/shows and then play them through your Nokia device – Its simple and its quality. Absolutely everyone can use this app as there are radio stations out there to suit everyones taste and mood – And we’re talking about thousands and thousands by the way!

Brought to you by the talented boys in blue, Nokia Internet Radio is available in Ovi Store for FREE and is compatible with Symbian OS – S60 5.0 devices.

With little fuss there are mutltiple ways to find the radio station you want, and if you cant quite decide then just explore the various ‘Collections’ and it will really help you find something to suit your mood. In the ‘Collections’ screen you can search by Region and Language, and if you select ‘Options’ you can also choose by Genres – All three are really useful. Additionaly in the ‘Collections’ screen, you have a list of all the stations you have recently been to as well as all the stations you have tagged as your favourite.

There are absolutely endless languages, genres and regions to choose from and there really is something for everyone – Mongolian FM anyone?!

Find the station that takes your liking and select to get listening instantly.

The three icons at the bottom of the screen gives you options to add the station to your favourites list, buy the song from Ovi Music, and to stop the streaming – It will continue to stream as you navigate around the app and will only stop if you select another station or stop the streaming directly.

Whilst listening to the station, choose ‘Options’ and then ‘Details’ to find out some useful bits of info about the station itself.

There is also a text search functionality if there is something specific you want to listen to.

Although the layout isn’t necessarily pretty, navigating around the app is straightforward. The number of stations this enables you to choose from, really makes this app the one stop shop to enjoy all the pleasures of radio – Be it music related content or talk radio. The streaming works prefectly well and will move into the background as you search alternative stations, as well as when you leave the application itself - This feature makes it totally versatile as I was easily able to write emails and SMS messages whilst the streaming continued in the background.

The only minor criticism I have of this app is that the app icon itself is rather….well boring . That’s only a shame because the app itself represents a broad and dynamic collection of content that isn’t boring at all. There is a station out there waiting for all of us – But you just need to get this app first in order to find it!

@mhashmee Good news about Internet Radio for the N8. Are Skype and Vlingo for the N8 anywhere near ready for release to Ovi Store? Thanks.

  • mhashmee

@techbiz – We’re not sure exactly when they will be ready but, both are well into development! Watch this space for updates. Are they the apps you are most looking forward to on the N8?

  • http://indexing.vbatech.com techbiz

@mhashmee – Yes, Skype and Vlingo are my top priority apps for the N8, since I use the phone primarily for business. Thanks.

I found out the program will not play stream audio with embedded song titles even though they are listed in the Nokia directory.
For example from the Nokia directory for Canada, CISL has four stream sources:
    48 kpbs: 64.34.159.32:8000/cisl-acc
    32 kpbs: 64.34.159.32:8000/cisl-mp3
    32 kpbs: 64.34.159.35/cisl-mp3
    32 kpbs: 64.34.159.52/cisl-mp3
