Nokia Apps for the Youngest Among Us: Baby Animals and Baby Memo
by JasonBlack
There aren’t a whole lot of apps in Ovi Store for the toddler set – yet … However, two apps from K’Kaa Games demonstrate that quality mobile content can be created for little children. The games they have released in Ovi Store are visually easy to figure out – which is good for those who aren’t yet ready to read instructions – and make great use of the capabilities of Nokia’s touch-enabled devices to create engaging activities. And, each game includes several mini-games within it, so there are multiple options to choose from that help to reinforce one another, and the little lessons that go along with playing these games.
First up is Baby Animals, which has three games built in. The first is the most simple of the three – it plays animal sounds, simply by touching the picture of the animal that appears. Each animal displayed makes its specific sound each time you press it (one small note, the sound made by the dog was very hard to hear during testing, but all of the others sounded great).
This video from the developers shows the Baby Animals game in motion:
As you can see, all of images have this wonderful, hand-painted quality to them, and the navigation within the app is big and obvious.
In the other games within Baby Animals, there is a “discover” game that reveals the full picture of the animal after various shapes are moved correctly in to place; and then best of all there is a “motion” game, which is like discover, but it uses the accelerometer within the device to detect the movement and tilting of the phone back and forth to get the objects into the right spot.
The second app from K’kaa Games is called Baby Memo – and no, it is not for teaching toddlers to take dictation. This is a memory-style game where the object is to make a variety of different pairs or matches of pictures that are displayed like cards in a grid formation on the screen. The first of the three games in Baby Memo is called “Rondo” and the object is to remember the pictures behind six different cards, and then match each one to the image displayed in the center of the screen – all of these memory games require that you are paying attention!
There is also a classic memory style game, where you match pairs of pictures – in grids of 6, 8 or 12 squares, and a twist on that theme where you must match the picture to the sound that is made by the object you see, so it could be animal sound, or an instrument for instance.
You can try the Rondo game on the K’kaa web site. The games are visually charming, have adorable sounds, and should provide a pleasant form of entertainment for those among us who need to share our mobile devices with the little darlings that are just learning to appreciate how to say “app”.
Both Baby Memo and Baby Animals are available for download from Ovi Store; and there are “Lite” versions of each game to try for free. And, as you will see, a new Baby Music game is also now in Ovi Store.
More information is available direct from the developers about Baby Animals and Baby Memo.
