Train Hard, Burn Calories and Win with Nokia and Endomondo Sports Tracker

by mhashmee

Endomondo, Endomondo, Endomondo! I could say this word one million times yet not get bored of saying it – Such is the coolness of the name. But this coolness I speak of is much more than skin deep, as underneath lies a quite beautifully crafted personal sports tracker application that seems to make me happy every time I look at it!

And, before I go too far … let me also point out that for the month of February, you can enter to win one of 2 new Nokia C7 devices, just by using Endomondo Sports Tracker. Complete details are at the end of this post …

So, as I was saying, despite the high quality design and extensive functionality of this app, Endomondo Sports Tracker is free in Ovi Store. It is a product of Endomondo and the app is compatible with Symbian OS – S60 5.0, Symbian OS – S60 3.x and new Symbian devices like the Nokia N8. (A complete list of compatible devices is available from Endomondo.)

Free from pointless menu’s and busy icons, Endomondo is awash with crispness and clarity, bundled in an attractive colour palette of subtle grey gradients and lime green zest. The well thought-out layout and clean typeface draws my eyes to the right places, keeping the app easy and enjoyable to use.

There are some really appealing features embeded in this Sports Tracker package, but they are not intrusive to the homescreen which is vivid and attractively laid out. The display on the four main windows can be interchanged to track a number of key stats – Duration, Distance, Speed, Heart Rate, and Calories. The Heart-Rate can only be monitored with the use of an external heart monitor, such as a Zephyr HR monitor, (Check their website for more details).

On initial startup the app does make you sign-up to the Endomondo website, but in doing so really extends and completes a great user experience as the doors are open to the global ‘Endomondian’ community!

Once you have login credentials, Endomondo Sports Tracker can connect directly to your online profile to upload all of your lap times complete with geographical location, (through GPS).  Additionally, track your history of events, evaluate your performance and draw inspiration from the activities of fellow users. The video demo below shows how Endomondo appears online:

Endomondo Sports Tracker can be used to monitor a variety of activities such as Running, Cycling, Skating etc as you set yourself personal Goals/Targets or just when you are training casually. The app keeps a log of your lap times and if you are connected to the Internet you can post them directly online. Additionally with the integration of GPS, it will pinpoint your location which is really cool if you want to team up or compete against fellow users, or if you just want to track your own performance at the same locations/journeys.

Most people love to exercise and train to music for inspiration and motivation which makes the Music integration (for Nokia’s Symbian touch-enabled devices) within the app a really well thought out concept.

Within the options you can adjust some useful things like the Units Measurement and Internet Access Settings. Two really fun features though are Audio Couch and Peptalk which seems fairly gimmicky, but may well be fairly useful to some – let us know what you think.

I am personally not in training at the moment, but just exploring Endomondo Sports Tracker has really inspired me to get back on the treadmill! The interface is so attractive and the app is a real joy to use but the online community integration is what makes it so appealing to me. It really makes for a wholesome experience that goes beyond just recording lap times. With Endomondo you can instantly upload your lap-times to your own personal profile online where you can monitor your training in a more detailed and professional environment, whilst sharing thoughts and drawing inspiration from other fellow trainers.

Endomondo Sports Tracker isn’t just for the expert trainer but will also appeal to all those novice’s who are seeking for that little bit of inspiration!

Need another reason to try Endomondo?

You could win a new Nokia C7 smartphone just for logging your workouts! For the month of February, Nokia and Endomondo are offering a global challenge. And, you could have multiple chance to win. As they note on the challenge web page: “The more calories you have logged February 28 at Midnight CET, the better your odds as you will get one ticket in the draw per 100 calories logged.”
