Want Some Retro Platform Gaming Action? You’ll Dig Marv the Miner 2
by JasonBlack
If you enjoy the platform-gaming genre – you know, those games made famous by the likes of Donkey Kong, and other titles where the object is to run, jump, climb and generally advance from one level to the next as fast as you can, then you will dig Marv the Miner 2 by London-based Digiment.
This game has been around for a while now, but happily it is available for a broad range of Nokia’s Symbian devices (as well as some Series 40 devices, too) – I’ve been /trying/ to play it on my Nokia E7. I say this because I’m not good at it – I will admit that right away, but the game plays great on this new device, where the big screen view makes it easy to fully enjoy the action.
The game plays in landscape mode – if you try to play in portrait, you get an error message asking you to switch the view – and provides ample space to see the level to be conquered, as well as providing access to all of the on-screen controls, which work flawlessly.
Before showing you how the game looks on the Nokia E7, I thought it would be fun to show you how the game has looked in the past … as you will see, it hasn’t changed a whole lot, but perhaps it has matured a bit to accommodate the specifications of new device types. This demo from vanzay84 shows the game in action:
The game still has 31 challenging levels to play, and like any decent platform-style game, you must highlight/run across all of the steps in your path to complete the level and move on.
Along the way, you want to collect as many gems as you can, avoid assorted baddies/monsters, and make sure you don’t fall too far – it’ll kill your friend Marv. Mind you, you get three lives to begin the game, but still, run and jump with both eyes open.
As you move along, you will have new tools available to you to help you complete each level, but remember, each level is timed! Run out of time, and that will kill Marv, too.
Now, one other thing to point out about this game – and this is for the true gaming geeks and developer friends among us … The makers of Marv the Miner 2, Digiment, have posted the full source code and build files for this game, and several other titles they produced. Cool, right? You can learn from their experience, and perhaps even build on their success!
Marv the Miner 2 is available for $1.99 (USD) in Ovi Store. There is also a free version, with in-game ads and 20 levels to play; and if you still aren’t convinced there is a 3-level demo version to try, too.
