I must say, I’m slightly disappointed to be back in the Mountain View office after a great week in London for Nokia World 2010! I had a lovely week out in London seeing my colleagues, friends and met dozens of people I’d spent the previous few years tweeting, blogging and emailing with about Messaging on Nokia devices!

I really enjoyed the conversations I had both on the show floor and at MickyFin’s blogger meetup with Nokians like Jussi Pekka Erkolla, developers like Jan Ole, and bloggers like Rafe Blandford, David Gilson, Mark Guim and Devin Balentina. I did a few interviews covering all the new messaging features on the N8 like this one.

I also got to spend a few nights out with some of my favorite colleagues, Fran, Angelika and Vince around London:

I’m enthusiastic to interact more with the community now that I can associate more names with faces! It was another great Nokia World and I can’t wait for more events, and couldn’t be more excited for the future with devices like the Nokia N8. I’m carrying a blue one and couldn’t be more pleased to be playing with the new Ovi Maps, the Foursquare application as well as the Email, Chat and Social apps from our group.

Feel free to reach out with questions or comments to me @DavisatNokia.

-Davis

With more people using Nokia Messaging than ever before it is even more important for us to make sure that everyone knows how to set up and use Nokia Messaging on their device!

So with that in mind the guys on the Nokia Support YouTube channel have uploaded a series of videos documenting how to set up and use various Messaging features:

Firstly here is a video on how to set up Messaging for email:

And next we have a simple getting started with reading and responding to email guide:

Followed by a guide to attachments:

But as we all know email is not the only Nokia Messaging service, so here is an intro to chat:

Followed by an intro to social networks:

We hope you have found these useful and remember that more are available on the Nokia Support YouTube channel .

Next week is an exciting week for us in the Messaging team. We’re off to London… but this is no holiday!

There will be no trips to Big Ben, Buckingham Palace or Tower Bridge for us. No, we’re doing something much more exciting: We will be at the London ExCeL centre for Nokia World 2010!

Maybe we will see you there!

And we have a lot of reasons to be excited…

Firstly, we have come a long way since Nokia World 2009 in Stuttgart:

•	Never before have we been able to showcase so many devices which feature email, instant messaging and social networking

•	Last year we had just over 1M Ovi Mail subscribers. Now we have over 14M Ovi Mail and 3M Ovi Chat users, many of whom live in emerging markets. Nokia is helping these consumers stay connected in a whole new way with their first email and instant messaging accounts.

•	A year ago we were driving 30K activations a week now more that 30K consumer are activating Messaging every day.

But Nokia World is all about the future. It’s about what is coming next… and how is communication changing.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at what you’ll be able to see in London next week:

•	We will have Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat demos on all our latest devices in the Connecting Everyone area.

•	The new Nokia C6 and Nokia N8 email application is on show at the Work and Life experience center and you can find out more about that from Davis in this video:

•	In the Mobile Computing experience area we will be demonstrating our new social experience for the Nokia N8 , showing how Ovi can help you to share, learn and know more in real-time – helping you stay connected in new and better ways.

Even if you won’t make it to Nokia World next week make sure you keep an eye on this blog – as we will be posting our videos and thoughts on all the best conversations around email, IM and social networking…

In the meantime, we’re interested to know: What are you looking forward to at Nokia World?

This week we have been asking our fans on Facebook [facebook.com/nokiamessaging] and our followers on twitter [twitter.com/nokiamessaging] some questions about how they use email on their phone:

Firstly we asked everyone how often they sent emails from their device:

Most send messages daily with some power users commenting that they would send over 50 a day or that email was the first thing they looked at in the morning on their mobile!

This really shows the reliance some of our users are now putting into email on their phones!

Next we asked about the relationship between email and text, with more and more phones now equipped with email capability when do you send an email instead of a text:

The 2 main reasons given were due to attachments or due to the length of the message. There were also a number of users who referenced the tendency to use email for more “official correspondence” and others who stated that the 2 are not at all comparable!

Meanwhile on the Nokia Facebook page [facebook.com/nokia] they have asked the fans this week what they do most with their mobile, the results are interesting:

Actually making phone calls comes in at 5th here, behind social networking! With email and IM both in the top 10 as well!

What do you all think of these results? And do you have any questions you would like us to ask the community?

Here is the one from New Delhi:

But what was in the Nokia Box? Well to find out here is a video from the guys in London:

So there were 2 of the New C6 devices inside fully equipped with the latest Nokia Messaging features! One of the lucky bloggers (CJ) goes into more detail about the C6 in his detailed unboxing here:

But how about a behind the scenes look at the #NokiaBox? Well Mark from The Nokia Blog was at the #NokiaBox in Time Square and wrote a great “behind the scenes” post.

Enjoy the videos and have a good weekend everyone!

Recently we scoured the web and found some really useful tips on how to set up and use Nokia Messaging… Well there are plenty of great guides out there so here is another useful set of hints and tips on getting started with Nokia Messaging for S60 devices:

Firstly we have to recommend taking a look at the Nokia Support Videos channel on YouTube, there are loads of videos on here covering all aspects of device setup.

The guys at Nokia India have also been busy with these 2 great videos on Nokia Messaging setup for the 5800:

Oh, and they’ve also done a handy hints & tips video for the E72:

Hi everyone, recently, there have been some questions around what “Nokia Messaging” actually is. Some of you may have discovered the service on your Nokia phone, and others may have come across the term “Nokia Messaging” on various websites. So here is an outline of what Nokia Messaging is and what it does:

Nokia Messaging is:

1) A push email and IM service from Nokia that allows you to access your existing internet accounts

2) A service access through a application typically found in the Messaging folder on your device

3) One of the many services you get from Ovi on your Nokia phone

4) Like all data services, it requires a data plan from your carrier to access

Why does Nokia Messaging exist?

From talk to text to email and then to instant messaging (IM) and social networking, people across the world are connecting in new and innovative ways. On PCs, email was one of the killer applications that drove early Internet use. It became so essential to our lives that most of us wanted constant access to it. And for the next generation of Internet users, staying connected with IM and social networking was even more vital than with email.

However, despite various studies that showed that up to 80% of consumers wanted to connect to their favorite email, IM and social networking accounts on the move, less than 10% had even attempted to set up email on their phones!

And we know why…

We’ve been listening to the problems you’ve been having and, as a result, have worked hard (and are still working) to address these common hurdles by making mobile email, instant messaging, and social networking:

Easier to set up
To connect to your favorite email, IM or social networking accounts simply enter your user name and password and begin connecting. Access up to ten email accounts, all your favorite portal IM communities and the most popular social networks.

Easier to use
Your email, IM and social networking applications are optimized for mobile use, with one-click shortcuts for the most popular functions, an interface that closely resembles the experience on a PC and makes sending emails, instant messages and connecting with your social networks easy.

Affordable
Get more out of your data plan: Get premium messaging service without the cost of a premium phone. Checking email with your Nokia is cheaper since our service consumes 4x less data than other messaging services.

Please keep us up to date with any further feedback as hopefully you can see that we are listening and are working towards making Nokia Messaging the best it can be.

Hello,

Today I’d like to highlight a few things about the email client on the upcoming Nokia N8 that I know our fans are going to love. If you’re familiar with our history, you’ll know we launched first with a downloadable email client back in 2008 for devices like the E71. A lot of our users really enjoyed the user experience and design of that client, but wished we could have done more in terms of integration with the device.

On the Nokia E75, we introduced the integrated email that handled Nokia Messaging, Mail for Exchange and direct POP/IMAP accounts all in one place. Users on those devices really enjoyed that integration but wished for a few things like HTML opening by default.

With the Nokia N8 we’re proud to be bringing out the best of both worlds in an integrated experience. On this new client (which can also be found on the recently shipping Nokia C6), users will find a number of brand new features, with accompanying italics to indicate why this matters to you as a current Messaging user.

Full HTML support – Including pinch-and-zoom support and kinetic scrolling throughout the client

Full device integration with multiple home screen email accounts – So you can see up to ten accounts on the homescreen

Email client syncs read-notifications – So when you read a message on the desktop, your phone syncs that info (and vice versa)

UI and Settings simplification – Easier setup, faster client and quicker navigation

Improved reliability server-side – Service uptime is an incredibly important barometer for us and this new client takes advantage of server-side improvements that will further increase reliability

Portal address lookup for Gmail and Hotmail – Ability to look up your contacts email addresses from your portal address book

Messaging Service benefits – Battery life efficiency, on-demand attachment download and forwarding,

Supports 250 messages in the inbox – Up from 100 in the current clients

Supports 10 IMAP subfolders – No need to select on website, client automatically selects first ten subfolders

Memory storage on the largest non-removable memory drive available – Never worry about memory usage from message store

I do feel compelled to write out in advance that many people will likely comment “where is this for my current device”. Nokia is proud to make durable, robust devices that work for many years. I feel that we in the Messaging group have done an excellent job bringing advanced Email (and IM) to Nokia devices. Looking at a device like an E71 which shipped with a POP/IMAP client with no HTML, we brought a client that delivered push access with full HTML support to any email provider.

We fully expect and understand people to respond that they’d like to see these features listed above coming to their existing phones. We do our best to deliver a compelling experience to as many users as possible through client and firmware updates. We are very proud of the existing clients and even more excited about what we’re bringing out on the N8.
