About

Magazines and travel guides have their limits, as we all know. It’s amazing how fast things can change – travel info carries a ‘best before’ date and it’s usually yesterday!

Maps Explorer brings you travel news and tips with a difference. Casting new light on tried and tested destinations and bringing fresh, undiscovered locales to the surface, we aim to take you to places no one else can.

Joel Willans

Joel Willans

Originally from Suffolk, Joel Willans is an award-winning short-story writer who left the UK in 2001 for a year of travelling. He’s yet to find his way back. So far, Joel’s adventures have taken him to over fifty countries on six continents, from feasting on guinea pigs in Peru to cave kayaking in Laos. Though he’s enjoyed the buzz of independent travel ever since sleeping on a Parisian traffic island on his first night Interrailing, he still believes home is where the heart is. He just wishes he had more hearts.

Peter Sterling

Peter Sterling

Peter Sterling was born and raised in the wilds of the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. "It's grim up north", as the locals say, but what doesn't kill you inevitably inspires you to become a travel blogger par excellence. Having tried his hand at everything from lucha libre to paddy-field rice farming, perhaps making a cosy living in front of the typewriter was the natural outcome after all.

Writers

Are you an experienced traveller with a treasure chest of anecdotes and a gift for writing? Looking to become the next Bruce Chatwin or Graham Greene? We’re currently hunting for creative talents to contribute articles to the blog.

A strong line in offbeat locations, thought-provoking stories, and eye-catching headlines is a must. If you think you’ve got what it takes, send us an email with a sample of your writing and we’ll be in touch!

Photographers

We aim to support the Creative Commons movement with the photos we display on this site, highlighting the work of photographers who have chosen to put their work forward for shared use.

Whenever possible, we use images attributed with the Creative Commons Commercial License. If you have photos you’d like us to consider, get in touch with our photo editors with some samples and we’ll be in touch!
