A museum that won’t drive you round the Benz

A museum that won’t drive you round the Benz

As a confessed car hater, getting my enthusiasm in overdrive about a museum dedicated to automobiles was always going to be a challenge. But you should never underestimate the Germans.

Let me get this clear straight off. Cars do nothing for me. In fact, as a cyclist it would be fair to say I’m more inclined to hate them than love them. Not driving means I don’t get off on horsepower or how quickly they can get from 0-60 miles an hour or how fancy the leather interior is.

You get my point.

Imagine my response then when I visited friends in Stuttgart and they suggested we go to the Mercedes Benz Museum. I might not be a good car enthusiast, but I like to think of myself as a good guest, so I bit my tongue and followed along.

And guess what, I’m glad I did.

The first thing that strikes you about the museum is the way it looks. Eight stories high and very sci-fi, the architecture alone makes it worth checking out.

As soon as you walk through the door, you can tell Mercedes Benz have invested a lot of time and effort in making sure you enjoy the experience. As you’d expect, there are load of cars, 160 according to the brochure. I admit I didn’t look at them all, but I did find enough to interest me for a good couple of hours.

My own personal favourites were the collection rooms. Here you’ll find different themes such as the Gallery of Celebrities, which chronologically showcase interesting Mercedes Benz vehicles.

Perhaps unsurprisingly considering my car animosity, my two favorite exhibits were buses. The Buenos Aires bus and the 1974 Western German Football team bus.

I never thought I’d recommend a car museum to anyone, but if you’re in Stuttgart, make sure you hit the road and park yourself here.
