For the first few years after moving from London to Helsinki, I sorely missed my breakfasts out. Gone were the long mornings of reading the paper while tucking into bacon and eggs at Konnigans or the Giraffe. The only option available in my new hometown seemed to be an overpriced hotel buffet or the poncy Cafe Ekberg (nice enough but so busy it turns into a battleground at weekends).
Thankfully things have since got better and Helsinki is now packed with excellent all-you-can-eat breakfast options, from Krulla to Enjoy It, Pääkonttori and Primula. Needless to say, I’ve enthusiastically checked out every new entrant to the market.
When Moko Market Cafe opened its doors in Punavuori last year, I didn’t hold my breath. I’m not big on interior decoration or shopping, so eating my morning grub in a furniture market sounded like a Kafkan nightmare. Would I have to buy the chair I was sitting on if I spilled my coffee?
But to remain the Helsinki brekkie connoisseur I’d been until now, I had to give it a try. And I’m glad I did, because not even in London is there anything to match the veritable feast they lay out every Saturday.
Berries, yoghurt, a huge variety of breads from the local bakery, steamy cafe lattes and freshly squeezed orange. Loads of different fruit, veg, hams and cheeses. Ok, there’s no hot stuff, but I’m sure my arteries will once thank me for the lack of sausages.
What clinched the title to Moko, however, is their cakes. They’re freshly made on the premises and enough of a reason to stay the course from 10am to 12.30pm. Leave too early and you might miss the blueberry tart. You have been warned!
