Pitstops in Germany’s luxury car capital

Stuttgart is home to more than just fancy cars. It also has some natural pitstops perfect for taking a break from the rat race.

Last week Stuttgart-based Mercedes Benz published their quarterly results. As you might expect in the current climate, they weren’t very good. In fact, they sold nearly 80 000 less luxury gas guzzlers than this time last year. As someone who’s no great fan of cars, that stat didn’t make me lose much sleep.

Then I got to thinking, what if it was me who worked there. How would I feel knowing that things were going so bad? Companies aren’t monolithic, unfeeling entities (well, not all of them). They’re made up of good, hardworking people who sometimes need to take a break.

What better place to do just that, than your own city? So, here are three top spots for any Mercedes Benz execs who want to put the brakes on their worries.

The “cradle of the automobile” has many places that can put the breaks on your worries.

Killesberg Park

Within easy reach of the city centre, Killesberg is a beautifully landscaped park that’s ideal to escape the rigors of business life, especially in spring and summer. There are plenty of lawns for picnicking. If you happen to be there on an especially hot day, you can take a dip in the open-air pool. All this and not a car in sight, unless of course you climb Killesbergturm, the sci-fi looking viewing tower.

Leuze Mineral Bath

If chillin’ in the nature doesn’t help a Mercedes Benzer get all Zen, then wallowing in the Leuze Mineral Bath will. Stuttgart is home to the second largest concentration of mineral water springs in Europe (only Budapest has more). The bath makes full use of this natural resource with eight indoor and outdoor pools and an adult sauna area, which is mixed and nude. Be sure you’re in the right gear.

Wilhelma Zoo

Okay, maybe a zoo isn’t the place for quiet relaxation, but it will certainly help you appreciate what a wonderful world we live in, regardless of how many people drive fast cars. Wilhelma has an impressive ape and monkey colony, Europe’s largest magnolia grove and a fine aquarium. Its 1200 square metre Amazon house will help any tired motor industry execs remember that there are other jungles than the one in his office.
