What would happen if you asked a hundred people what their favourite island is? I reckon you’d probably get a hundred different answers, from island countries like the UK to tiny paradise atolls like Tahiti. I’ve had the great good fortune to visit many memorable islands in my life, but until today I’ve never really thought about what makes them so special. Now, after careful consideration, I’ve created the Willans Criteria. As a result I can share with you my premier league of island destinations.
So what sort of places made the grade? First off, they had to be surrounded by an entertaining sea. By entertaining I mean warm, clean and clear enough to provide some sort of activities, whether it’s swimming, diving or just lounging on a lilo.
Secondly, they had to have a beach that’s comfortable enough to doing something else once sunbathing gets boring. (Even if it’s just throwing a frisbee.)

Thirdly, they had to have more to it than simply sea and beach. This means there had to be something in its interior to fill cloudy days.
Fourthly, they had to have seaside towns or villages with cool bars and restaurants to get me fed and watered in the evenings.
Finally, the islands had to be pleasing to the eye. Not necessarily anything as clichéd as palm trees and golden sands, but it scenery that had me constantly fumbling for my camera.
Using these criteria, here’s my top ten islands in no particular order. In the next few weeks, I’ll be showcasing these beauties in more detail. In the meantime, feel free to share your top ten finest islands too.
1. Hvar, Croatia
2. Zanzibar, Tanzania
3. Boipeba, Brazil
4. Roatán, Honduras
5. Koh Tarutao, Thailand
6. Pulau Perhentian, Malaysia
7. Santorini, Greece

Croatian islands are gems, Hvar is up there along with Korcula and Miljet. I will forever remember the smell of cedars and the sound of crickets while sunning myself on a deserted rock cliff.

I’ve yet to have the pleasure of Korcula, but I’m definitely returning to Croatian, so will check it out next time.
It came as a wonderful surprise to discover how amazingly beautiful the country is.

I’m glad you liked Roatan!
It’s one of the finest places to be in Central America.
Greetings from Honduras.
