Barcelona – tapas or not tapas?

In the last of our mini-series on Barcelona, we investigate the phenomenon known as tapas!

Liquid refreshment is an essential part of any journey, or at least that’s what we here at Maps Explorer are constantly explaining to our co-travellers. Barcelona offers something a little different in this respect. It begins with a ‘t’. Yes, you guessed it: tapas. Not exactly a drinking hole and not quite a restaurant either, the tapas bar is a very popular institution in this city and there are plenty to choose from. Here are our picks, including a great juice bar for that moment when the tapas buzz runs out.

El Xampanyet

Turn down that little cobbled alley, pull up a chair and order a bottle of Cava.

After several mind-bending hours spent walking around the Museu Picasso open-mouthed, El Xampanyet can provide exactly what you need (provided exactly what you need is a cold drink and a touch of traditional cuisine). Turn down that little cobbled alley, pull up a chair and order a bottle of Cava. Those old guys in the corner won’t bother you – bottoms up!

Bar Pinotxo
The Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, or La Boqueria, is a market in the Ciutat Vella district, just off La Rambla. It’s a constant draw for tourists in search of a bargain and those flocking to see the nearby opera house. It also plays host to some cracking little tapas bars, and Bar Pinotxo might just be the best of them. Unfortunately, this is no secret, so finding an empty seat might well be a problem.

El Quim De La Boqueria
This swinging little joint is another tapas bar located in La Boqueira. Perhaps you should duck in here if Bar Pinotxo is too busy. A very close second best, it has to be said.

Sucs & Go
Last but not least, a tip for those full-to-bursting days of walking, observing, absorbing, and general touristic exhaustion. Pep yourself up with a smoothy in this great little bar. In summer time it’s a must!
