Alternative prize/winner categories, contestant publishing

Last edit October 7th, 2009 By Rps

I’d like to propose some prize categories to name in addition to the 5 “winners”. Possible categories are:

  • Hack using the largest number of features of the N900
  • Hack using the least number of features of the N900
  • Cheapest hack
  • Hack connecting to the oldest technology in the contest
  • Installation using the largest number of N900s
  • Hack with the largest hurt-factor to the technology-affine user
  • Ugliest hack
  • Most beautiful hack
  • Technically crudest hack
  • Technically most elegant hack
  • Most useful hack
  • Most useless hack
  • Most “phony” hack
  • Least “phony” hack
  • Least original hack (because of highest number of duplicate or near-duplicate entries)
  • Most N900 centric hack (because the N900 could least probably be replaced by any other (mobile?) device)

Maybe the jury can at least select some of these categories, in addition to deciding on the 5 winners based on “awesomeness” of the idea.

I am not sure if it is planned to publish all PUSH N900 entries after naming the winning hacks/mods, but I personally find this would be fun. It would also allow to find a winner nominated by the community (although online polls/votings are prone to manipulation and need some consideration to ensure their fairness). If it is too much effort for the jury to decide on the different categories, this could be also done as a community poll e.g. by assigning scores for the attributes:

  • Design / Visual appearance
  • Technical elegance
  • Phone-ness
  • N900 centric
  • Effort
  • Awesomeness

What do you think?

Happy hacking

  1. Hey rps,

Sounds like a nice idea. We can promise anything yet, but a people’s choice award could work well.

What do the rest of you guys think?

  2. I don’t like very much use the categories because we can have very good 5 entrys in one categorie but we can just select one and the others entrys can be bad but we have to choose one :S

  3. On jury-nominations, I would hope that the jury could leave out categories with no interesting candidates and split the “position” for shared first places in a category. After all, it’s like an olympic medal – there is not necessarily anything to win.

With the community-assigned scores, it would be obvious if several entries have a similarly high score. And it sould depend on the user if he/she looks at the best/best3/best10 or all entries.

I thought of it in terms of fun – it’s some kind of consolation prize after all.
