We did our first KAV (Kite Aerial Video) test, and it was a success!
First I thought the range between the devices using Wi-Fi would not be very good, but a preliminary test last year showed the signal could reach 100m or more without disruption. Yesterday we managed to loft the N900 and test video recording and transmission from the kite to the N900 on the ground, which received and displayed it.
Recording was perfect, and the transmission was rock solid for up to 150m! After that we started to notice a few dropped frames now and then, but the quality was still impressive! When we reached the end of the kite’s line (more than 200m), more frames were dropping, but the system was still perfectly usable!
What you see towards the end of the video, at the left, is a 41m high water slide (perhaps the largest in the world), located in Porto das Dunas, near Fortaleza – Brazil. You slide down the 41m in about 4-5s, reaching 105km/h.

That is so cool!!

That is a very interesting test you did. In principle we have too many obstacles on the ground, and we should get larger ranges on the air… I would love to see a precise measurement of the the link quality varying with the kite distance!… =)
How exactly is your connection again?… Is it just an ad-hoc network between the phones? You may try with a separate router some day, it should enhance the link quality. You may need it the day you change the kite for a balloon!
