Boxee on N900!

Last edit April 15th, 2010 By Doctorklein

Boxee is marketed as best way to enjoy entertainment from the Internet and computer on your TV.
http://www.boxee.tv/

My goal for the PUSH N900 Mod  is to use the power of linux on the N900 device to run Boxee (linux) software on the device to access media content directly on the phone.

The user can view and access Boxee on the N900 and use the TVout connection to bring the FULL experience into your living room!

This seems like a perfect fit since both PUSH N900 & Boxee are pushing for hacking of their product!

But I need your help out there!

Heres my one problem. I DONT KNOW LINUX! Basically if its in the repository I use it! I have no idea how to run deb files, use the x-terminal etc. Please contact me if your interested in making this happen and lets submit this together!

Thanks!

  1. Wow nice idea……….. Wish I could get a hold of my buddy Patrick he has MAD Linux Skills as does my other friend Ryan he runs a Dole plant from his home computer when he’s not at work. Used Lightwave to do graphics as well. Wonder what he’s up to now. I haven’t been able to get a hold of either of them. Ryan has good electronics knowledge as well.

    Good luck…………

  2. Just do this : http://temporaryland.wordpress.com/2010/01/20/openoffice-org-and-the-gimp-on-the-n900/ but use the existing Boxee Linux app.
Unless Boxee open their protocols, the community can’t write our own client.

  3. Just a little headsup. To get it working, you’ll have to rewrite all the plugins and dependencies that Boxee requires for the ARM processor, that the N900 uses (since Boxee is written for the x86 processor and it wont run on an ARM Cortex Processor very efficiently, if at all). Then you need to make sure all the other dependencies that ship by default on a full Ubuntu system and that Boxee uses are also available for the Mameo platform that the N900 runs.

You’ll then have to write your own flash plugin that makes use of whatever graphics card/chip the Mameo uses for its TV out, to push some of the video processing off the main processor on to the graphics chip, so it doesn’t get overloaded.

Finally, you’ll probably have to customise Boxee so it can work with the low specs of the N900 compared to the sys requirements for Boxee (http://wiki.boxee.tv/System_Requirements).

Personally and not wanting to rain on your parade at all, the N900 wont be able to run stock Boxee. You’ll have to start from scratch with the source code, getting someone to rewrite it to fit the constraints of the device.

Sorry, but I’m not a Programmer though, just a Consultant.

  6. XBMC is what Boxee bases itself upon. It requires OpenGL which we don’t have on the N900, so it’s not going to happen.

  7. closed source. cant figure out why boxee would link to this. the only thing keeping this from happening is boxee and their licensing.

  9. Just wanted to point out this link that just came out on engadget. Looks like they want Boxee on the iPhone. If the iPhone can handle it dont you think the N900 can? http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/15/boxee-seeks-ipad-and-iphone-app-developer/
