Hello!

My name is Davis Fields, and I’m a product manager for Nokia Messaging. I’m happy to announce the official release of Nokia Messaging. Please go to http://email.nokia.com to download the latest version. Today is the last day we’re going to be on BetaLabs and I’m going to begin posting on this S60 Living blog. I’ll write about updates to the service, features we’re working on, and helpful tips and demonstrations. If you’re new to Nokia Messaging, please check out all my old posts about it on the BetaLabs blog.

I look forward to continuing the great dialogue we have with the users of Nokia Messaging. Thanks for your feedback, and enjoy the holidays and the new release of Nokia Messaging!

This application is like a blessing for me,I have used mail for exchange and Google’s Gmail application on my E61 but as Stefan said this application is like a can of different worms,it surely is :)
Keep up the innovative ideas flowing Nokia Inc. and thanks David for the warm announcement.

Hi Davis! Really good job! It’s working much faster then before. The only thing I can’t add my second email address due to it was used for my previous (old) nokia email account and I can’t used for my current account. I have cancelled my old account, removed my email address from, but still unable to use. Any suggestions?

  5. Brian Doherty wrote

Looks good – IMAP folders are a good additional feature. I’m still missing the feature that lets you specify a return-to address. Wasn’t that in the first beta?

  6. Waleed Gumaa wrote

Very good application, however in the latest incarnation, wifi as a connection method has disappeard!!!

    Have I missed something?

There is no support for S60 5th edition phones yet (the 5800 XpressMusic specifically) so I have no idea how well it works or not. I did try using the app for the N96 but it crashed constantly. Boo. :(

HUGE PROBLEM! Application is great, although why take away the access point list!? this now makes the app useless – I connect through work wi-fi while at work, and then the internet access point when elsewhere? How do u change? Many of us do not have an unlimitted data plan, and the use of Wi-Fi is a must when sending large e-mails – thus reducing costs? also not able to swap to my home wi-fi when at home? Can anyone comment on the reason such a HUGE option has been removed? I would have rather stayed on the beta release with this option enabled…… The help menue mentions this is availabel in the ‘enterprise’ version’?? although there is no way to get it – Are you stopping those of us that cant pay yet from using this feature??

  9. Edwin wrote

I have installed the application, and setup an account. No e-mail is shown on the phone, even though I have new e-mail in my IMAP account.

  10. Edwin wrote

Ok, in response to my comment above, I am getting e-mails on my phone now. Not sure what changed, but it does work now

  11. G Webb wrote

I have an E61 (3.0633.09.04 RM-89) and I think I have found a bug with Nokia Email. When it is installed clicking on options for images in the Gallery brings up a warning message instead of opening the menu – “unable to execute file due to security reasons”. This occurs in both the image list and when viewing individual images. Uninstalling Nokia Email fixes this issue.

I hope this can be fixed as the release version of Nokia Email is a good email client.

  12. Peter wrote

How can I set it up for working with Google Apps email (Google hosted domain) ? please help…

  13. Alban wrote

I have only one question. The default message app that comes with my Nokia E90 allows one to read html email (attachment html). Will Nokia messaging also do so? Without html, I would rather continue with the default. i have looked for an option to download html email and could not find it.

    Regards,

    Alban

The graduated Nokia Messaging app looks more like a beta minus one version.

  15. Lex wrote

Now that I upgraded from Beta, I can’t get attachments to download? Made sure attachmen size was not too big but it starts to sync but then doesn’t get the attachment. Any ideas?

  16. Steve wrote

I’m still getting “Unable to connect with the information provided. please try again” when I try and set up a Google Apps hosted e-mail address. Has anyone managed to set one of these up since the latest Nokia e-mail version was made available?

  17. Peter wrote

Since last week I cannot sent any emails. I’m getting “500: Failure – Unrecognized SSL message, plaintext connection?” error message.

Please help because I do like the application and would like to continue to use this.

  18. Usman wrote

well ever since I have upgraded to this “graduated version”, I have to either sync manually or else I get mails after hours of delay! Can’t understand my the push to mail option has been replaced with “soonest “.
Doesn’t look soon to me at all

  19. Nokia E71 firmware 110.07.127 wrote

Messaging bugs on Nokia E71, sent to Davis by e-mail:

    1. When trying to Compose, phone says “Composing: not enough memory!” or something like that.

    2. When trying to Compose, phone says “Address Book not available”

    3. When occasionally able to start composing, after adding one addressee, the new message window closes by itself and the app jumps back to the main Messaging menu screen.

    4. When able to start composing, and entering part of an addressee’s name, the address book list takes a few seconds to appear (slow performance, that’s all).

    5. App randomly requests that I log in to the service (i.e., by typing my password into the phone). It does this a few times per day, even when I have network access.

    6. The Search app built into the phone does not search Nokia Messaging, even with all possible search services selected. You may not have written software for this yet, but business users will insist on it.

Sync with IMAP folders seems to work well. Attachments download fine, but they take a while to start downloading and then Quickoffice takes a while to open them. Cannot add second e-mail account either.

  20. Dennis Bournique wrote

Latest version is an improvement in many respects but I can’t find any way to change the access point.

On my N95-3 iNokia Mail is stuck on my home WiFi access point with no way to change it.

This makes the app useless for it’s intended purpose as I can’t use email when I’m out and about.

    Hi Davis

After I tried to upgrade my Beta, I followed all the steps I have been following since I started to use the first Beta.
But when I get to the setup, I enter my email address, then shortly I get the message “Unable to connect with the information provided. Please try again”.
This has been happening since the 17th of Dec. I see I am not the only one experiencing this problem I have been following the feedback on Nokia Beta Labs and on S60 Living Blog but you have never addressed this issue.

    I am using a Nokia E61i.

    Thanks

    Madoda

I am also getting the error message “Unable to connect with the information provided. Please try again.” I have a GMail account as well but I am not able to receive SMS message on my phone so I installed the Nokia Messaging app manually from email.nokia.com.

Any idea as to what is causing this issue?

  25. Mario wrote

I’m having the same problem as many here. A Google hosted domain and an E61, accessing through IMAP. “Unable to connect with the information provided”. The original (cruddy) Messaging app that came with the phone works fine. Is there anyone actually reading these comments and possibly taking action or replying? I haven’t seen any resolution.

I can’t select different access point to sync my email, Can we have the beta version back? It’s just more friendly.

  27. Davis Fields wrote

    Hello,

Sorry for the delay in responses over the holiday. Here’s a few tips / suggestions.

    UPDATE FROM NOKIA MESSAGING TEAM:

A few answers for the time being -
    1. Access point selection is coming back in an upcoming patch. We made a big mistake on this (it wasn’t an arbitrary decision, we’re exploring better ways to switch between APNs as well). Apologies for any problems this may have caused. Here’s one workaround for the time being:
    - during client setup (in the E-Mail setup program which runs after receiving the text message), set the connection as default. this will mean that the email client will take the system default connection.
    - to swap to 3G data or other wifi connection: open the browser (or other application that needs to go OTA). if you have set data connection to “always ask”, the S60 will ask you what connection you would like to use…select (for example) 3G.
    - close browser and connection.
    - email client will now automatically connect to the last data connection.

    2. We’re going through and fixing issues with the “500: Failure – Unrecognized SSL message, plaintext connection?”. One of the changes we made in this release was to use your mail provider’s SMTP server to send out emails (so they always appear in your webmail sent email). That change caused problems for some users. We’re actively fixing them. We did a large patch on Friday that resolved most of these issues, but if you’re experiencing that problem, please send an email to support@nokiamessaging.com

    3. If you’re getting connection error messages, try this: Log into email.nokia.com using your email address and password you signed up with, choose “edit settings” on either of your email addresses, change the password (just put back in your email password, don’t actually change it). Go back to the main page of the website and choose “install” and re-send the installation SMS to your phone.

We ARE reading your comments here, emails you send to nokiaemail [at] nokia.com, and blog and forum posts around the internet. Your feedback is valuable, and while any problems you’re experiencing with Nokia Messaging are understandably frustrating, we’re working to resolve them for you. The fixes that we make today will result in a much better final product as we continue to improve Nokia Messaging.

  28. Xradeon wrote

Thanks Davis for the suggestions. I’ll try again later changeing the password on my mail account. But I’ve done that many times and the connection error message is still there.. I downloaded manually the app ’cause my carrier doesn’t send the installation sms to my phone. Thanks anyway!!

Hi I have been having a problem ever since Nokia Email went out of beta i have been unable to install Nokia Messaging and I even stopped receiving the installation sms. I tried downloading from the link and it installs fine but the problem comes at the setup it keeps saying unable to get settings from carrier. I’m based in Uganda and it was working fine when nokia email beta started it only stopped when it changed from Nokia Email to Nokia Messaging. So what can i do? i have resorted to using Seven Beta.. Any help would be appreciated. I’m Using a Nokia E61i with MTN Uganda.

I seem to find that email is not pushing to the device (E71) that quickly. In fact, alot of the time when I navigate to the nokia messaging interface, the sync circle is very often greyed out with a line through it, indicating, I presume, that the connection is offline or inactive. I then have to manually sync and the circl turns green with the arrow circling round, indicating in sync mode. However, a lot of the time, when the sync is finished the circle turms grey and line through it again! Basically I now have little confidence that emails will pushed to my phone instantly, and have to frequently check and manually sync to ensure emails are not being missed. I was under the impression that this was a push email service, providing instant mail delivery? – sometime it does do that, but not as frequently as I would expect. My settings are set to ’soonest’ under ’send and receive’ in ‘when to sync’ setting. Anyone else got same experiences? – any fix please??!!

Seriously considering reverting to runninng seven beta along side as emails pushed instantly to phone in my experience -I would then sync nokia messaging as i prefer to use the nokia interface.

I too tried to install Nokia Messaging for the first time on my new N95 and it immediately gave me ‘unable to connect’ messages. Also, hopefully the ability to choose an access point comes back in a future release too as that is a major feature persuading me to use this application.

Can’t wait for the next release…

  42. Steve wrote

I have just started using Nokia Mesaaging after a short stint with the Beta version. I stopped using the beta version due to what I describe as bloat. On the e71 home screen there is too much information even when no emails are present in your inbox – a simple reference to the inbox name and number of new emails will suffice. Also rather than having the email alert constantly on the homescreen can we set it to only appear once an email arrives? I run two email accounts but the homescreen only refers to the default by name, relegating the other to a non-descriptive ‘other mailboxes’. If you are running ten then it would be nice to know which inbox holds the incoming mail rather then scouting through the other nine. Don’t get me wrong, the general functionality of NOKIA EMAIL is very good though the interface itself could be improved – not really one for the IPhone or the Blackberry bold but their crisp clear messaging leaves NOKIA EMAIL looking a bit dated even before it as started. It would be great to take advantage of the 16m colour pixels and provide us with something to rival the IPhone/Blackberry – perhaps we will have something to boast about when the HTML version gets released – come on Nokia – push the envelope – if you can’t do that then at least match the competition, you have the device lets use its capabilities.

Watch this space for how I get on with the latest version!!!

There is something wrong with this app on my nokia e71 with the new firmware.(didnt test it on the old firmware)
I’ve got everything sorted on the web page, put my two gmail accounts in, but when i try to configure the nokia messaging app, it asks of me only the email address, no password, and after the “getting e-mail settings” i get an error “unable to connect with the information provided. Please try again”

i guess this error is normal, since the app did not asked me the password.
    help?

I just upgraded my E71-2 to the latest firmware (200.21.118) and ran smack into the “Unable to connect with the information provided. Please try again” error. Very frustrating!

However, after much experimentation, IT WORKS AGAIN. Here are the steps I took which led to success:

    1) Remove the old version via app manager. There were two apps named “Nokia Email” to remove.
    2) Eject my memory card and power off/on. (Just to be safe)
    3) On my desktop machine, log into http://email.nokia.com/
3.1) “Edit Settings” — reset my email account password
3.2) “Password” — reset this password too
3.3) “Install” — Enter phone # (for USA) and select phone model. This sends an SMS

NOTE: I was previously going direct to http://email.nokia.com/ in my phone’s browser and downloading that way. The only attempt that worked for me was when I followed the SMS link.

    4) Install, it says I need to reboot to complete the install, let it reboot
    5) The setup wizard now asks only for my PASSWORD, not my email address. Hooray!

    Hope this helps someone else!

I’ve installed Nokia Messaging onto a Nokia E71 using my 2 imap accounts hosted at 1and1. Configuration is fine and downloaded email out of my inbox onto phone. I’ve tried manual synching and although no error message the new messages still refuse to show. I have, BTW, sent email OK.

I like the program and no doubt can only get better! I’m curious as to why new messages aren’t been downloaded?

    Hi,

First of all it’s a fantastic program and integrates beautifully on my e71. It’s (nearly) perfect. I’ve configured a gmail account which works very well, but when I reply to emails I can’t see my reply anywhere – it’s not save to the sent folder and also not tacked onto the email I replied to in the inbox. Where can I see my replies?

  59. Charles wrote

Also I would like to add that when replying there is no ‘message sent’ confirmation to let me know it worked. As the reply doesn’t appear to save anywhere there is no way to know if it worked or not, other than checking my gmail account on my PC – where I can see the email in my sent folder.

The moment I select options menu for an image I get message “Unable to execute file for Security reasons.”, The only work around for me is to uninstall the email messaging application and set my new wall paper and then install email messaging again .. The only way to get out of this screen is by pressing Exit. If I Exit, when I come back it asks me for my email, not my password, then I get the annoying “Unable to connect with the information provided. Please try again” that many people here get.

Per Mr. Field´s suggestion, I will point my problems with Nokia Messaging:
To begin with, Nokia installation SMS does not work here in Argentina, so we have to dismiss that form of installation.
After entering my email data at http://email.nokia.com, I enter that same address on my N82 with last firmware, download and install the application. When I try to run it for the first time, it asks for my email address. After entering it, it tries to connect but after a while shows the “Unable to connect with the entered information, please try again” (in spanish of course).
I changed the password at email.nokia.com as per Mr. Field´s suggestion but whith no luck.

To Jose – was attempting to have a conversation with you on email specific to the problem you’re experiencing, but you seem to want to continue to have it in the blogs. You need either the SMS or to be in a country we’ve rolled out Nokia Messaging (Argentina not being one of those countries) in to have setup function correctly, otherwise, Nokia Messaging will not work. We have hundreds and hundreds of users in Argentina, so it sounds like Jose is having a problem more specific to him.

To summarize what I’ve said before – this is not the final release, nor is a release we’re charging anybody for. We’ve got a patch coming in the next few weeks to fix myriad issues, a new version coming that brings really nice HTML support and other features, and we’re currently working on bringing a great IM experience as well.

I can understand someone reading the comments on this article and thinking this is a buggy product, but we’ve had tens of thousands of users sign up in the month since I’ve posted this article. You don’t find a lot of comments on software release articles that say, “Hey, everything works great!”. People write when things don’t work. We look at the things you write and we work on fixing them.

Again, if you’re having a problem sending emails through Nokia Messaging, please write support@nokiamessaging.com. Other support questions can go through http://www.nokia.com/support, or through nokiaemail [at] nokia.com.

    2. Why is there no confirmation dialogue when sending an email?

Apart from these and the lack of data access point control this is a great program – I would like to be one of the people giving positive feedback also! It feels slick and I like the notifications. Actually one more thing- I would like to be able to minimise the homescreen notification to only take up one or two lines. Please include this option! Love your work.

    Best regards,
    Charles

hi davis, i am on google apps account. i was using latest version of nokia messaging :

1)messages sent from devise not showing up in webmail sent folder (last beta was not a problem on this count)

I had to remove my SIM card and upon reinserting the email software was giving a lot of trouble :

1)the auto sync failed to function and i had to always manually sync it.
2)it was alternating between detecting my GPRS and wifi and I had to go thru my browser to correct this

in the end i uninstalled and went back to last beta version [build 9.3.0.123 (main)] but i find that the sent folder problem exists now even in this build (whereas i did not have this issue while using this version before upgrading to the alpha version of the nokia messaging)

all in all not such a pleasant experience so far.

I just purchased a Nokia N85 and downloaded Nokia Messaging. I am having a similar problem syncing as USman and Alessandro have experienced.

I have checked my email on a computerand noticed new emails. These emails had not been sync’d to my N85. It sometimes takes several hours to receive these same emails to my phone via Nokia Messaging. These emails will come in chunks at the same time. However, the time and date of the emails reflect the it accurately, and not the date and time received by the phone. The problem appears random, sometimes I receive the emails and sometimes I do not.

In conclusion, sync’ing is not consistent and I have experienced delays in receiving some emails via Nokia Messaging.

  77. Greg wrote

P.S. Manual sync does not alleviate the problem. The application shows the “sync” symbol, and nothing happens.

    Hi Davis,

Is it possible for you to give us an ETA on the next version release? I have decided to uninstall the app at this stage as it has a few too many problems. I actually bought the e71 because I was assured it would handle my emails effortlessly so it’s a little disappointing. Please provide a facilty to register for email updates regarding the release of new versions.

I do like the program a lot and I would be happy to pay a small fee for it to have it working properly. I actually need these functions!

Hi Davis, I just installed this yesterday and am using it with my Yahoo Mail account. So far everything has worked brilliantly. Previously I was using three different methods of accessing my email: (a) standard S60 email client, (b) via web browser at m.yahoo.com, (c) the Yahoo! Go application. From my experience so far, Nokia Messaging is the best of the lot! Thank you for an excellent product and service.

What can I do to make it work real time?

    Hi Guys,
the Nokia Messaging continues behaving very strangely… It seems like it wsorks at night (CET) and in the morning (til 9-10 AM), then it stops. Useless maybe, but that’s really useless… Yesterday I haven’t received a single email msg on my N96. Tonight at 2:35 AM … the flood: all emails in one shot (about 200) Crazy, isn’t it?
Just as other users say, manual synch doens’t help at all: wheel turns, and stops, no emails on the mobile!

I wrote to support@nokiamessaging.com and I was bounced… (se my previous comment).
I wrote to Nokia Italian customer care: they were kind, but they didn’t help (they said “upgrade your nokia messaging with latest version”, which I already had, so…)

My setting is also REAL TIME as Joseph’s.

I think that Nokia should tale an official position on this situation.

I also think that Nokia Messaging IS working, but they underestimated the load (user requests) and their infrastructure is not properly sized. So in my opinion – for what it’s worth – we are not experiencing real bugs, but “just” a DoS (caused by other users, to which Nokia is giving priority…).

PLEASE, NOKIA, EITHER YOU MAKE THIS THING WORK, OR YOU SUSPEND THE SERVICE UNTIL IT IS WORKING PROPERLY.
LIKE THIS, IT IS SOOOOOOO FRUSTRATING!!! :-(

Messaging worked great for 3 days and then stopped working. Resetting passwords did not fix the problem. Leaves the E71 as a poos email tool. I will be returning it.

  84. Mike D wrote

Well about half my messages showed (about 6 hours after they showed up in my Yahoo email box), but they are truncated and do not show the message. The other half of the messages never showed.

I have found that Nokia Messaging is always asking for a wifi access point when it tries to sync. Because my SSID on my home router is set to hidden, Nokia Messaging can’t see it! When it asks for a wifi access point, I have to type in my SSID, then it can connect (for that sync only – rinse and repeat for the next sync). Any other application on my phone can see the hidden connection okay (as it is set up as the default access point in my phone settings). This is really quite frustrating. I have tried the methods mentioned above by Davis Fields, but they do not work for me.

  86. Handschuh wrote

My E71 also does only sync manually with nokia messaging although the application claims to be online all the time.
Sending emails works like a charm, but I never received even one email automatically.

  87. Markus wrote

    Handschuh i can agree,

since 2 days the emails are not being pushed to my E71, im using a custom domain with google apps,
in the google apps account i can see the imap connection from 213.185.186.4 gw1.vie.hosting.nokia.com
but the mails are not being pushed to my cell.

my gf owns a E71 aswell she is using a custom google apps account aswell, same problem there.

I sniffed the whole connection it looks like the Nokia Servers are overloadet, the communication between google and nokias servers are okay, the communication between my e71 and the nokia server is okay aswell.. i think nokia has to handle too much mails and the result is a endless mail queue.

    Just my 2cents

    Hey Davis,

Firstly, let me congratulate you on the fantastic product you and your team have made in Nokia Messaging. I find it really intuitive and easy to use and am eagerly anticipating future releases.

I just thought I’d let you know about a bug I’m having when trying to add an additional email address to the service. I have 2 email addresses and Both of them are Google Mail accounts. The first one, @ganeshshankar.com works like a charm and took less than 5 minutes to set up using the Nokia Messaging interface.

However, every time I try to add the second address, @bcsinnovations.com.au I get a “Unable to connect to the server. Please try again later.” error.

As both accounts are Google Email accounts, I find this quite strange. I think it would be extremely helpful if we were able to manually enter connection settings for Nokia Messaging to access the mail provider because then I could just work around the auto-detection problem.

Also, would it be possible to add auto-sync times which are less than 1 hour. I find “push” email drains my battery too quickly but only syncing ever hour is a bit long. 15min or 30min would be ideal.

    Cheers,
    Ganesh

If I uninstall Nokia Messaging the problem disappears. I have also carried out a phone reset (3* green on start up) per other threads I have seen, but this only fixes the problem to the extent Nokia Messaging has been removed from the phone.

Was working fine until I installed the latest release

    Hi There,
First let me say that this product will be the only alternative to BB and finally I can use a nokia feature with a real push email feature. I have two E71s in Spain one with orange operator worked first time and my wife is very pleased with it. Second with Vodafone, having the same problem unable to connect after 5 min of trying to connect. Removed the software 7 times, tried 2 emails account one is Yahoo (which works with my wife phone) the second is GMAIL nither is working on the vodafone. Tried to change the password. No luck it cannot connect to the email server and cannot complete the setup! It is a firmware since my wife migh have a different firmware or is it operator.?

I’ve been using Nokia Mail for a couple of days with my E71 and am on the whole impressed. There is however one feature missing from the email client: the ability to specify a bcc address to be automatically added to all outgoing messages. I need this to maintain the integrity of my main mail database, so that when I get home I can collect all the mail received and sent while I was out and using the E71, and preserve threading. I don’t think I’ve ever used a mail client which didn’t offer this feature. If you add this (and I *really* hope you do as I consider it essential) a related feature would be useful, though not essential: don’t sound the alert on receipt of the bcc messages.

Gmail works brilliantly on my E71 / Nokia Messaging.
However so far I have had no luck with IMAP access to the corporate mail which works with my regular s60 email client. This account requires access over SSL for both incoming and outgoing emails.

I do not find a way to specify using SSL for outgoing email when you try to add a new mail box using client software though it allows to specify that for incoming mail. Configuration through email.nokia.com portal doesn’t provide an option to specify secure access for both incoming and outgoing mail.

Did anybody get around this , thanks in advance for the help.

I bought an E-75 a couple of days ago. I have always been a communicator user – having owned 9500 and e90. I bought e 75 since I had to replace my e90. But I am having major problems with nokia messaging service. I configured my email account as a POP3 and it worked well for a few hours. My password was changed and I needed to update my Account Settings on email.nokia.com. This is where I am encountering major issues. In the first step it recognizes me as a registered user but does not accept my password. When I try the forgot password option, it says your name or account is not registered. the Nokia Care helpline was least helpful in resolving this issue. I can’t seem to find any other technical support for rectifying this issue. If my email, does not work – the whole purpose of buying this phone is defeated and I have no choice but to return this phone and move out of nokia family and buy a different brand phone. Please help.

Hi Davis. I am trying to install Nokia Messaging on my N82. I have a UK operator SIM but am using a USA PAYG SIM whilst in the USA for a year. This SIM doesn’t have data access so I have been using the wifi a lot. Is it not possible to install this program without a SIM led data connection? I can’t specify an access point during the installation process and it takes ages using the SIM’s MMS access point. When it’s finished, it simply sets up another mailbox in the S60 messaging application – which I already have. Is there a way round this for me – other than sticking my O2 UK SIM back in and ramping up some UK-USA data roaming charges – which I think would be extortionate? Thanks.

Problem related to not being able to open attachments is not related to Nokia messaging but to old versions of Quick Office and Adobe. You must update these application or advise your contacts to use older, more standard formats.
